Students

Shown are some pictures of students and brief biographic data.  Please let us know if you would like to “Adopt-A-Student” whereby you would contribute to their education, send them birthday cards,  clothing, etc.  In turn we would send you periodic updates including school progress and pictures.  See section under Donors/Sponsors/Volunteers.

NAZRIA

Nazria is 11 years old.  Her father left her before she was born and shortly after her birth, her mother left to find work in Manila and has not been heard from since.  She has been raised by her grandparents who have a number of other children.  Nazria has been with us about one year.  She arrived with little clothes and no underwear.  She was also very thin.  Recently at a swimming need for the disabled Nazria won four gold medals, the 25m and 50m freestyle plus the 25m back stroke and 25m breaststroke.  We are looking for sponsors so that we can train Nazria and others (3 other of our students took 2nd place in these competitions). The 2009 Deaf Olympics will be held in Taiwan.

Merry Ann

Merry Ann is 9 years old.  Her mother has a terminal illness and her father works very hard in the public market, often sleeping there so he can carry goods for the vendors to earn money for medicines and food for the family.  Merry Ann is a very bright child who is consistently on the honor roll.  She is constantly practicing her finger spelling.  She also has a smile on her face at all times.

Alma is we don’t know how old.  She is the fifth of nine children and her birth was never registered.  We are assisting the family in obtaining her birth certificate.  The parents are not sure of the year she was born but think it was 1978 which would make her 26.  Alma’s parents are subsistence farmers in a rural area and alma used to shell rice to make a little money.  Although her educational progress is slow, she has learned sign language well and has many friends among the students.  Alma is a very happy person with big smile.

Vincent, Francis and Norman

They are three of four children ages 8, 10 and 16 of a very poor family.  The fourth child is a girl who is hearing.  At first Norman  thought he was too old to go to school.  After seeing the progress that Vincent and Francis were making, he decided this year to come himself.  He is doing very well and getting good grades.

Honey Grace and Brent

They are the youngest of five children ages 6 and 12. Their mother has died and their father had moved from the area.  They live in our dormitory during the week and with their three older siblings, who are hearing, on the weekend.  The oldest brother collects coconuts to earn monies.  We help with educational costs for a sister who is a junior in high school and have promised that if she continues to do well, we will support her for college.  The five children are very supportive of each other.  Their needs are many.  Honey grace is an honor student.
