Alma is we don’t know how old. She is the fifth of nine children
and her birth was never registered. We are assisting the family in obtaining
her birth certificate. The parents are not sure of the year she was born but
think it was 1978 which would make her 26. Alma’s parents are subsistence
farmers in a rural area and alma used to shell rice to make a little money. Although
her educational progress is slow, she has learned sign language well and has many friends among the students. Alma is a very happy person with big smile.
Vincent, Francis
and Norman
They are three of four children
ages 8, 10 and 16 of a very poor family. The fourth child is a girl who is hearing. At first Norman thought he was too old
to go to school. After seeing the progress that Vincent and Francis were making,
he decided this year to come himself. He is doing very well and getting good
grades.
Honey Grace and Brent
They are the youngest of five children ages
6 and 12. Their mother has died and their father had moved from the area. They
live in our dormitory during the week and with their three older siblings, who are hearing, on the weekend. The oldest brother collects coconuts to earn monies. We help
with educational costs for a sister who is a junior in high school and have promised that if she continues to do well, we
will support her for college. The five children are very supportive of each other. Their needs are many. Honey grace is
an honor student.
